Few costumes are as loved, or as photographed, as a little Krishna on Janmashtami. The look is simple and iconic, which is exactly why the details matter.
The Krishna checklist
- Pitambar: the yellow dhoti, Krishna's signature colour.
- A kurta or angvastra (a light drape across the shoulder).
- Mor-mukut: the crown with a peacock feather.
- Bansuri: the flute, tucked into the waistband or held to the lips.
- Waist belt or kamarbandh.
- Jewellery: a necklace or mala, armlets and bangles.
For babies and toddlers
Keep it light and comfortable. A soft dhoti, a small crown and a flute are enough. Do a quick trial so the crown sits well without slipping over the eyes.
Finishing touches
- A small tilak on the forehead.
- A touch of kajal (use a gentle, child-safe product).
- A little matki (pot) for makhan-chor photographs.
Building a tableau
Schools often stage a whole scene: Radha, Yashoda, Vasudev carrying baby Krishna, or a group of gopis. Send the character list and we can help with costumes and props for each. Browse the mythological rack or see our Janmashtami page.
