A costume that pinches, slips or trips will distract a child far more than stage nerves. A few minutes of measuring saves the day.
What to measure
- Height: the most reliable guide for children's costumes.
- Chest: for fitted tops, cholis and uniforms.
- Waist: for dhotis, skirts and trousers.
- Head circumference: for crowns, caps, turbans and animal headpieces.
Age is only a starting point
Two eight-year-olds can be very different sizes. Share height and age when you enquire, and bring the child for a trial when you can.
Headpieces need the most care
Crowns, caps and animal heads should sit firmly without pressing, and must never cover the eyes or mouth. Check that the child can turn their head and speak clearly.
The movement test
- Walk
- Turn around
- Sit down and stand up
- Raise both arms
- Say their line out loud
If all five feel easy, the costume is right. Visit the studio for a trial; see the characters rack for ideas.
